I ran

But it was weaksauce - had to walk a bit in there. Just didn't want to sit on my butt all weekend - had to get outside and do SOMEthing!
24.5 min / 2.7 mi = 9.1 min/mi

Saturday, November 17, 2007

Yes!

So this morning, I woke up early and ran...

8 laps in 18:03 min.

Pumpkin Run 5K, 2007

This was the second time the three of us ran this race. We ran this race one year ago, which was our first taste of running races, so today was a fun anniversary for us to mark the year's passing. Perhaps "fun" should be in "quotes." :) Hey Andrew, post a bit RE: thoughts about the day.

We had the big fires the week before this race, so E and I didn't run even though we'd planned to do a few tune up runs. Despite missing those tune ups, I beat my time from last year, and also met my goal of running at a sub-8min/mi pace. This was also my first race in the new shoes. The McAlliSTING was on as I barely squeaked past AH for the W. Emily and I took home the 3rd place division awards which was a ceramic Halloween-themed coffee mug.

I almost choked during the run and had to walk for a few steps to get over it. I know AH was complaining of tunnel vision, and E was also a bit dizzy. Hmm, everybody to the limit!..? A couple gals ran in prison uniforms with a chain connecting them together - a cute idea. There were a few other costumes, too. It'd be fun to run in a costume sometime, I think. We missed getting a picture by the "Finish" banner, so we got a group shot behind the race organizer's truck, which had all the pumpkins in the back. E's going to bake up some pumpkin goodies today, I think. Bread and perhaps cookies!

Meh, Hot = Slow

OK, got McAlliSTUMPED today on my run. Did a 5k trial run, plus a LITTLE extra distance ... 27.25 min / 3.2 mi = 8.5 min/mi. That's not good if I'm going to beat 8 min/mi. It was hot.
Hopefully next Sunday is cooler.

This run makes it tough to go out and do Halloween parties the night before...

Don't get McAlliSTUNG

I'm goin' for the McAlliSTING by the way. ;)

Post illness runnang

hi. i ran today. First run in the new shoes. Did pretty well.
21 min / 2.6 mi = 8.1 min/mi
Even stopped to pet a nice little dog along the way. A bit of chest pain maybe from breathing too hard, but just ran through it.

RE: the 5K, I'm certainly breaking last year's race time, and hopefully will also break 8 min/mi for this race.

Oops, I Forgot...

Whoopsies--- I forgot to post yesterday's run...

SAT 10-13: Ran 8 laps in Lane 6 = 3832 yds, in 16:58 min

I thought that I ran 7 laps but it turned out that it was 8... thank goodness for my lap timing function on my cell phone!

Running

5 laps in Lane 6 in 10:29 min. After looking at some of my run results from the past, I feel like I am not running as fast as I used to. I dunno, maybe I'm not in as good of shape as I was at the beginning of the year.

Back In Action!

Congrats on the Nike run and all the activity. I did my first run today at UCLA in a long time. Here are the results...

Ran 6 laps in 13:17 in Lane 6.

5mi Run Hit Remix results n' new shoes

Run Hit Remix 5mi race was last weekend. So that was the third weekend in a row that I've done really active stuff in a row - Disney Half, then did a weekend hike in the white mountains which are 6hrs north of here - max altitude was 14,252 feet. Then I did this most recent run. So I'm pretty sore after all that - this weekend is marked for relaxation.

The crew that put together the run hit remix didn't notice that the starting mat did not work, therefore no one had their start times recorded based on their running chips. So that's a SNAFU. Very unfortunate, since I ran a really great race. But luckily I did look at the official race time when I ran thru the starting gates. Here's the results:
Overall Rank:620 of 8487 runners, top 7.3%
Bib3163
classrank100 of 989 M25-29, top 10.1%
sexrank451 of 3424 dudes, top 13.2%
pace (min/mi)00:08:01
chipstart(est.)00:01:08
chipfinal00:40:06
halfsplit00:21:41

A lot of folks just chilled by the stages setup along the run though - on the whole, I think everyone was just out to have fun and listen to some music. My first race where I opted out of the iPod!

Then, I got new shoes Sunday. It was 20 min before Sportmart closed, but I really wanted to get shoes so ES and I peeled rubber and had about 10 minutes to shop for new shoes. Tried on the $85 GT-2120's - best price I've seen for those. I need a 12 1/2, but they didn't have those. 11.5 is the last half size, arg. I see on Amazon they have the 12.5... Hmm, well, so I tried on a few others... Mizunos on someone's suggestion. Ended up with the Asics Oberon. Again, I should have gotten a 12.5, but 12s seem to be ok. Haven't run in them yet, but I did run across the street and ooh, that's nice. It's really squishy in the heel which has to be good for me. Not sure if my New Balance shoes were ever that squishy, but certainly now, the soles are almost completely worn off of those. It was a good stint for those shoes. They have really stayed looking nice despite lots of use.

We will likely do the Pumpkin 5k also. Haven't signed up yet though.

Probably last prep run before 1/2 Marathon

22.5 min / 2.8 mi = 8.0 min/mi

Sunday, August 26, 2007

Ran midday today, 2.8 mi, 23.9 min = 8.5 mi/min. 7 days 10 hrs until Disney half marathon.

2 Treadmill runs

Ran twice on my vacation - on a treadmill, going 10 min/mi for 25 min each time. I suppose that distance would be 2.5 miles each time. I still gained weight on the trip though :) And the half marathon is 10 days away! That won't be a record breaking run since I've missed so much training - I suppose I'm just hoping to finish.

18.66 / 2.3 mi = 8.11 min/mi

Monday, July 30, 2007

slowly but surely

Did 2.7 miles today in 23.8 minutes. That's 8.8 min/mi. Getting back down to my normal pace at that distance.

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

PS: and my new shoes were heating up on the bottom... I guess it's just that the sun is intense and cooked the track.

I'M BACK.

After ~6.5 weeks since my last run, I am back! Yesterday, I just felt bored and depressed and had no energy. I almost didn't run today because when I got there, the meters were reserved for buses or something... luckily I found one meter open near a dorm closeby.

Ran 6 laps in LANE 3 (mostly lane 3-- first 1/2 lap I was in lane 6, but let's just say lane 3)...

LANE 3 = 454 yds

Total distance = 2724 yds or ~1.5 miles

Total time = ~12:51 min

I was sweating like a hog and when I stopped running I didn't feel too great... I also had a little chest tightness when I was running... no pain, but tightness. Definitely a sign of being out of shape. My MP3 player ran out of battery right when I stopped running... haha perfect timing.

Oh yeah, and I also broke my asics cherry today and used them on the run for the first time.

---Andrew =) (ps: I feel good now though)

Back in the game

Time was 24.75 min for 2.4 mi = 10.3 min/mi
(still recovering tho)

Do it.

I need to run. I've been feeling lethargic all this time... especially today. It's weird that you can be physically tired from not being active.

I didn't run that much after the 10K since I needed new shoes. I also felt like I needed to rest after that race. And, it's weird that I haven't gone out to do stuff like running (or other things) because I feel like I'd feel guilty for not staying at home to write or look for work. I logically know that that's not the case-- running gives you energy and I have tons of time to do anything I want plus get a ton of work done... I guess it's just an excuse.

Anyways, just thought I'd write a post since I'm fed up with myself being inactive. I need that energy and I'm going to try my new Asics that I got on July 4th. Tomorrow morning... it's on!

Comback time

OK ankle is healing. Did a run today:
1.2 mi / 11.25 min = 10.7 min/mi

Shoes aren't easy to find for some reason.

Sunday, June 10, 2007

The Distance

78 min / 6.0 mi = 13 min/mi. Took it slow.

Friday, June 08, 2007

Ran 9 laps in Lane 6 in 20:07 min

---Andrew =) (ps: I need new shoes...)

Thursday, June 07, 2007

Less than baseline

19.9 min / 2.5 mi = 8 min/mi, somehow!

I didn't think I was running fast... huh. I listened to This American Life, a radio show from WBEZ the NPR station in Chicago. What a great show - they do documentaries. This one was about a guy's family, and the vicious cycle of alcoholism.

So that about taps out these shoes (new balance)! Time for me to get new shoes tomorrow... I've been recommended to try on Mizuno's. I'm wanting much lighter weight shoes this time around.

Less Than A Week... EEK!

Yo yo...

Ran 11 laps in Lane 6 today... 24:04 min.

About a half-lap before my 11th-and-final lap started, I felt a little dizzy while running. Maybe dizzy isn't the best word to describe it, but I had to concentrate to keep my balance (the ground was moving, ya know?). I felt like stopping, but decided to go one more lap, which turned out to be my fastest.

---Andrew =) (PS: awesome job on the running dude! I better prepare myself to get McAllisterized)

Longer Run

Ran 5.4 miles in 45 minutes. Pace = 8.3 min/mi

That's almost double my normal distance.... but I maintained my pace!

I'm ready for this 10K.

Graphs of Running Stats!

Check this out: Running Tracker Spreadsheet

That link has a spreadsheet of runs I've done since January 2006. Pace, Distance, and Time are all plotted. The only real trend is that my pace is slowly declining :)

It's Coming...

I just realized that I forgot to say CONGRATS on the graduation dude! Uber goal accomplished... =)

Anyways, I just ran... I started my first lap in Lane 6, but then had to move over to Lane 4 midway through the first lap (damn UCLA track, grrr!!!). Anyways, I finished the lap in Lane 5 and ran on the inside part of Lane 5 for the most part during the run. So I'll just say that it was Lane 5 that I ran in (which is 470 yds/lap).

Ran 10 laps in LANE 5... 22:28 min (4700 yds)

---Andrew =)

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Baseline

22.3 min / 2.7 mi = 8.2 min/mi
10 days until 10K run

In other news, Google just added a charting feature to their spreadsheets. I will probably enter in my runs to that and have a graph of my runs pretty soon!

Oops... forgot to post yesterday (Wed)

Oops... I ran yesterday and forgot to post it. By the way, that's interesting about that article... 80-90 min weeks is pretty monstruous. Ahhh, the powers of the internetS.

Anyways, here's my results from yesterday (Wed)...

-ran 7 laps in LANE 3-4 (first ran in lane 4 since UCLA blocked it, then was told to run in lane 3)... 13:46 min.

My vent: UCLA track shouldn't have been closing down those lanes yet. They officially take over the track at 1pm, and I was there before then. Man, I was kinda annoyed that they started early. They should just close down the entire track earlier. I need my lane 6.

Also: ran on the inside corner (as I always do) of the lane (when I ran in lane 4)... but when I ran in lane 3, I ran on the outer edge (I wonder if that pissed off anyone... hope so).

1 Lap in Lane 4 = 462 yds
1 Lap in Lane 3 = 454 yds

So, I'll say for calculation purposes that 1 lap around for me that day was 458 yds.

Sitting on my ass and.....

Found this link:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/internet/05/15/internet.exercise.reut/index.html
But is correlation causation?

Might get off my butt tomorrow and run again. I just finished my graduation (ÃœberGoal: ACHIEVED!) and visiting my bro for his graduation, so I'm back in town, and hopefully back in my rhythm!

But yea... I ate cake for dinner today.

Speed Run

Didn't get to run Friday since I went skydiving that day. If only I could run as fast as I fall...

Anyways, I ran 6 laps today (~30% less than last week's baseline runs) in lane 6... 12:19 min

Lap 1- 1:55 min
Lap 2- 2:05 min
Lap 3- 2:08 min
Lap 4- 2:08 min
Lap 5- 2:06 min
Lap 6- 1:58 min

Mon's per lap average was... ~2:20 min
Wed's per lap average was... ~2:20 min

TODAY'S PER LAP AVERAGE: ~2:03 min

Mon & Wed (today)

Oops, I forgot to post Mon's results...
---5/7/07... 8 laps in lane 6 = 3832 yds. 18:43min

And here are today's results...
---5/9/07... 9 laps in lane 6 = 4311 yds. 21:00min

PS: I like to run when it's hot.

It was damn hot today! Better if I ran in the early morning or evening....

Less than 1 month to go

Ran only 5 laps today (lane 6) for 10:25 min at Drake.

That's an interesting strategy. I might do that now that I have some more free time. What I do know is that I need to start running at a slower pace. For some reason, I didn't run for slowness, but my lap times were slower than normal and my breathing was not as comfortable (more of a tightness). I felt a little sick afterwards but quickly recovered.

Maintenence Run

A friend of mine told me a new strategy to distance running. Starting in on that program, I did a baseline run today.

22.6 min / 2.7 mi = 8.4 min/mi

The program is: Run 4 times a week. Two runs are baseline distance at conversational speed (can hold a conversation with someone at that speed). Then one day a week, you shoot for speed, and decrease the distance by 30%. The 4th run is the distance run: 30% longer than the baseline, conversational speed.

<1 mo to go to the 10k!

Damn... Still Out Of Shape

I've heard of yo-yo dieting, but I wonder if there's such a thing as yo-yo exercising. I was in good shape when I ran the 5K, but now I can't run for shit. I ran 5 laps today (lane 6) in 10:23 min.

I think that if I was only able to run on the weekends, I'd be screwed. But because of hiatus, I can run on the weekdays as well. So, hopefully I'll be able to slowly-but-surely get to where I wanna be. That 10K is coming up soon.

---Andrew

Longest Run, Redux

This time, I ran farther. Did the 2.7 loop twice this evening. The stats:
48.1 min / 5.4 mi = 8.9 min/mi.

Didn't walk the entire time, but my legs were really tight especially towards the end. They felt numb almost, which I thought might be bad. I got home, stretched, and seems like I can feel them again! I'm getting quite close to the 10K distance.

Thursday, April 19, 2007

Season Over, Hiatus/Training Begins

Hiatus began yesterday.

I ran today (Thurs) before 1pm at Drake Stadium in Lane 6.

4 laps in 8:30 min... pretty bad, but hopefully I'll be able to get into shape before the 10K next month.

---Andrew =)

Longest Run

In prep for the 10K, I decided during my run today to make it a long run. I hit south bridge, then north bridge, and returned via the neighborhood. The stats: 40.3 min / 4.66 mi = 8.64 min/mi

So my pace was in the normal range, but I increased the distance by 70%! We'll see how much pain I'm in tomorrow.

El Moro Trail Run

Ran today at El Moro which is near Crystal Cove just north of Laguna Beach. Beautiful area, and temps were nice and cool as to make running bearable. The run was uphill (the trail was called BFI, as in "Big Fucking Incline"), for a total of 5 miles. Took and 1.5 hours total. That' 3.33 miles per hour. Usually trail hiking like this is at 2.2 mph or so, for comparison. The run got the heart rate way up, and probably worked out some muscles I don't usually use, so that's good.

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Weak jog

Feelin a little sick, but decided to get out today anyway and just do an easy jog.

25.66mi / 2.7mi = 9.5 min/mi

Might do some trail running this weekend! Never tried that before, though I assume I will be instantly decimated.

Friday, April 06, 2007

Friday eve run

Ran today, but felt pain from Tuesday's run. That was my worry - I would really hurt my legs if I ran really hard like Tues :( Bummer! Well, I'll keep at it. Today did:

22 min / 2.7 mi = 8.1 min/mi

Tuesday, April 03, 2007

run 3, oops, missed weekend run...but success today

Sadly did not run this weekend - I went paintballing, and then the laziness set in. I mean, I drove all the way to the track but there were no parking spaces!!! :P

But today, I made a huge comeback. 20.667 min / 2.7 mi = 7.65 min/mi!!!!!!! That is by far my fastest pace in the last 2 years over such a distance. Almost a full minute faster per mile than my normal running pace. It was a combination of longer strides as I guessed earlier in this blog, and also constant focus on the pace during the run.

Now I need to start taking that 2.7 miles up to a longer distance.

officially signed up for the 10K as of this evening.

Thursday, March 29, 2007

run 2, according to plan

22:58 / 2.7mi = 8.5 min/mi

I'm on track, yayy. I think a good goal for me is to break 8 min/mi for the 10K. Kinda crazy, but possible I think. Tough to know 'till I try.

Still working on the fancy plots... maybe will get time tomorrow.

Windy 10K training inagural run

To celebrate our recent decision to run the 10K in May, I decided it was a damn fine idea to get out there and run today. It was windy, and the first half into the wind was tough. But on the return trip, I got a "second wind" so to speak, and made it home in one piece.

23.2 min / 2.7 mi = 8.6 min/mi

I'm going to get some fancy run tracking graphs goin' on maybe tomorrow using Google Spreadsheets.

Sunday, March 25, 2007

Sunday evening guilt jog

Just did a jog for 12 min or so - didn't really time it tho, just got out for a bit before dinner. Didn't want to make this whole weekend a laze-fest!

Saturday, March 17, 2007

Whoa, we're both back!

Hey hey,

So I ran 4 laps today at Drake in Lane 6 for about 8:10 min. I tried going last week but there was no parking when I got there so I had to turn around and go home.

Anyways, yeah... lemme check my summer schedule to see if I can indeed fit in that Brentwood 10K. I'll call ya. Doing a 10K will be challenging but worth it, I think.

---Andrew =)

I'm back!

I'm back! But it's not pretty. 18:56/2.18mi=8.7 min/mi. Well at least I didn't break 9. And I was exhausted by the end. My plan is to do 3 runs per week now that it's light at night.

And Andrew - I'd like to do that Brentwood 10K. Let me know if you are still interested (just call).

Susan G. Komen 5K Results

YOOOOO...

Sorry for the late posting, but here are my results from my 5K on Sunday morning, Feb. 25th, at 9:30am.

-2036 runners, 4114 walkers.
-wore #354
-in division 102 (Male 18-24)
-official running time: 23:19 min
-average mile pace: 7:32 min
-placed 13th in my division
-placed 134th overall in race

There were tons of people there. I think I was screwed a few seconds out of my official time... partly because it took a while before I could start since I was in the middle of the pack at the beginning. Also, there was some confusion to where the finishing line was, so I stopped the time on my stopwatch prematurely before actually crossing the line. My watch said 23:10 but it was probably a couple more seconds after that because of the screw-up at the end. Also, I always question whether the volunteers get the actual times during big races like these. It seems so sloppy.

Anyways, I fully completed my goal of running a 5K under 24 minutes and beat my first-ever 5K score (24:32). My legs were a little sore the next couple of days, by the way. Oh yeah, and the only reason why I'm accepting the 23:19 score against my 23:10+ score is because the race got a little easier in the middle where it was just all downhill. Maybe that's part of the reason why I ran better.

The results are actually posted online at www.lackomenrace.org under "Race Information"... the fastest time was by a 22-year-old guy who did it in 15:41 min.

What else... oh yeah, during the race, I didn't feel as bad as our October 5K. I felt a cramp coming but I eased it by breathing heavily. It took me a long time before I got winded. Also, I recovered quicker after the race. During our October 5K I initially felt a little weird right when I finished, but I was back to normal pretty quickly for this one. Although... my high after the race was bigger in October I think. I did physically feel good, but not as good as in October.

Dude... my last stretch of running was awesome. I turned up the engines and the reserves and finished strongly. I flew by everyone and it seemed like I was the only one trying to do that. Everyone seemed to just jog in cuz they were tired. Man, my headphones came off and everything cuz I was just chugging along and my legs felt detached from my body. But I didn't care.

The host interviewed runners after they finished while the race was still going on and I was interviewed at some point. It was a good 5K and a good cause and I'll probably do it next year. I really feel like if I train hard enough this summer, I'll be able to do a 10K.

Go to www.photocrazy.com to see pics! Wish you guys were there!

DISASTER

5K run is in less than a week.

Only ran about 2 laps (almost 2 laps that is) in 4:02 min.

Didn't break a sweat or even have Gatorade.

Plus, during my short run, the left ear part of my headphones died. RIP.

Reason: my boss called during the run. I messed up something and he wasn't too happy. After getting the call, I didn't feel like running anymore.

I had a lot of time left on my meters... quarters were wasted.

And, I was supposed to go to Subway afterwards but decided not to cuz I felt bad.

Sick run

Ran on Thursday for 28:40, the 3 mile loop, but soon after I felt a cold coming on. End result: sick for the whole weekend. BUMMER DOOD.

Sunday, February 11, 2007

Sun Run

Ate some pizza (= my "steroids") before running at Drake Stadium this afternoon.

8 laps in Lane 6.

Total Time: 16:50 min
Average Lap Time: ~2:06 min

That 5K is coming up and I really need to get at least 9-10 laps next weekend.

Sat Run Time

I'm a little disappointed that I didn't run on Sunday as well last weekend. But, I plan to run tomorrow (Sun) sometime during the day.

Anyways, I ran today (Sat) at Drake Stadium and here were my lane 6 lap times...

Lap 1) 2:01
Lap 2) 2:09
Lap 3) 2:07
Lap 4) 2:06
Lap 5) 2:09
Lap 6) 2:09

Total Time... 12:41
Average Lap Time... 2:07

I was kinda distracted and disappointed after the run because I thought I had only ran 5 laps (guess I miscounted). Also, I was wondering if I was going to get a ticket while I was running for using a "failed" meter. And, I was distracted because I thought that I was going to get kicked off the stadium since a sign said that the lane was closed for UCLA practice (but it wasn't).

19 mile bike ride

Just let me know if these non-running activities don't count for this blog... but yea, 2 hours ride time, 19 miles! Went from my apartment down to Long Beach along their beach bike trail. What a beautiful day, yesterday. And no one was at the beach due to the football game, so I had plenty of elbow room. The bike ride ended up being too long though - I was really dragging at the end, and it was iffy whether I'd have to call up Em to get an emergency ride home :)

Not sure why I got so tired - the Running/Biking combo weekend might have been a bit too much. One thing's for sure. I haven't improved since October, so I don't think I should sign up for another race yet. I just need to get out during the weekdays and work more on improvement. Better weather will be a boon for this.

26 min run

Today, ran approx 3 miles in 26 minutes.

mile 1: 9:30 min
mile 2: 8:00 min
mile 3: 8:30 min

I pushed pretty hard on that mile #2, and I wanted to bump it up to 4 miles today, but my legs were feeling sore, so I decided it prudent to stop at the normal distance. I am going to go shopping for some new running shoes tonight - there are good deals at a nearby store, I hear...
Listened to songs from Argentina during this run - not particularly good running music.

Susan G. Komen 5K For Breast Cancer

Hey Emily and Andy,

I just signed up for the Susan G. Komen 5K Race just now. It's Feb 25th (Sunday) in Pasadena. I know it's a little far, but my co-worker had great things to say about this one. She said it was the best 5K she's ever been a part of.

Today's Run

Ran 6 laps in Lane 6 at Drake Stadium today. Here are my results...

Lap 1: 1:55
Lap 2: 2:02
Lap 3: 2:03
Lap 4: 2:10
Lap 5: 2:08
Lap 6: 2:01

-Total time: 12:19 min
-Average time per lap: ~2:03 min

I'm a little disappointed that I didn't increase my laps today and didn't really improve my time. I tried to improve my lap speed and run maybe an extra lap or two but as you can see that didn't work out. Last week and today, I tried to haul-ass/sprint on the final part of my last lap. Next week, I'll probably start off slower and run for distance.

25 minutes, 8.6 min/mi

Had a great run this evening after work. Found out that the neighborhood near me has a loop that's .94 mi, so a convenient distance. I made 3 laps, for just shy of 3 miles.
